P90X - Food ramblings, part 1

I've been going around a bit working on my diet (I only use the word diet to refer to what I eat, not with the goal of weight loss, but just as it is) to fit with the P90X nutrition guide and at the same time, of course, to veganize it, and to be careful of anything that might trigger my migraines or IBS - it's a little on the complex side.

My P90X coach, BeFit4U, aka Karen, gave me a useful link for printouts to use to track what you're eating if you're following the P90X nutrition guide. They're certainly a good idea - I have been writing down what I eat almost every single day for 3+ years in a tiny notebook and that by itself clearly isn't getting me anywhere.

My friend, the lovely Luciana, aka designed to be kind or dtbk, has been reading The Thrive Diet (which I would love to do, if any of my local libraries would carry it) and summarized some great info for me:

Brendan recommends, by volume 45% greens and fibrous vegetables, 20% pseudograins, seeds, legumes, 20% fruit, 10% nuts, cold-pressed oils, and avocado, and 5% whole grains and starchy vegetables.

Also, the recovery shake used by non-vegan P90Xers is a 4:1 ratio of carbs to protein (which I'm still working on - I get a little thrown given that phase 2 of the diet is supposed to be equal ratios of carbs:protein overall).

So that's it for random information for this post. I started doubles today (I'm staring phase 2 week 2 today - I didn't realize I could start doubles until last night) so I did Cardio X this morning and I'll do Chest/Shoulders/Triceps and Ab Ripper tonight.

Breakfast was a green smoothie - 1 banana, 1 cup spinach, 1 cup kikkoman soy milk, 1 tbsp ground flax, 2 tbsp nutribiotic rice protein (it's yummy, actually) and 1/2 of a frozen peach. Okay, breakfast was actually a cup of coffee with silk creamer and sugar - I admit it :) Then I did Cardio X, then I had my smoothie.

I also had 1/2 of a Chocolate Mint Clif Builder's bar for a snack and then lunch was some Kashi Go Lean Crisp Toasted Berry Crumble (a double serving - I was pretty hungry - this morning's workout burned 404 calories!) and a cup of the kikkoman soy milk. In case you're curious - and I bet you are - that's 69g of protein so far today and 995 calories. I have no idea what dinner is yet.

Hey Sarah!
First of all, thanks for the link to my site (myp90xnutritionplan.com)! I was looking at my traffic, , noticed that someone had come from here, and ended up finding your blog.

I'm also super excited to see that you are a vegan doing P90x. I am actually working on transitioning to veganism myself, and as a result I'm working on improving my site's offerings for vegans and vegetarians. So I'll be watching to see what good ideas you come up with! =)

Anyway, thanks again, and best of luck pressing play!
- CJ =)

Definitely keep us updated on P90X. I'm intrigued by it but wouldn't start it until the new year when I'm done with Insanity.

Hi CJ - Thanks! It'll be great if we learn from each other :) I left a comment on your Tofu and BBQ Beans about helping with your tofu issues :) And it's so nice to know that people are looking at our blogs :)

Mo! You're doing Insanity now? Or starting soon? I want details from you too!

Yeah, thanks for the comment! I think it will help other people out there that have issues with the consistency. When you said in your post that tofu becomes crispy after pressing and frying it, I suddenly felt a small glimmer of hope that maybe veganism isn't completely out of reach for me! =)

Also, last night I had my local take-and-bake pizza place make me an all vegi pizza with garlic cream sauce on it and no cheese, and I LIKED IT! Woot! =D

P.S. I have to tell you how ironic I found the title of your blog. Because I seriously have been starving now for weeks since I read that book (The China Study). It succeeded in completely turning me off to animal protein, but a vegetable-based diet is a huge stretch for me. Figuring out what to eat now is so difficult, so now I'm in a big grouchy funk about the whole thing, and I've been STARVING. LOL. And plus, I've discovered that my toddlers won't eat vegetables, hummus, and most vegan stuff. So needless to say, your blog is really speaking to me right now! =)

CJ :D I still hate some Tofu if it's poorly done (I'm talking to you, fast food chinese restaurants) and I pretty much LOVE tofu now. Have you tried tempeh and seitan yet? Also, here's the vegan forum I hang out on - this is there food pics section - totally inspirational - http://www.postpunkkitchen.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=29 - I promise you don't have to be starving! I LOVE being Vegan!! :)

As for toddlers? MY kiddo's favorite way to have tofu is just cubed and served. Plain. She's tough on other things and I'm still working on her.
