Vegan Living in Fort Bragg & Fayetteville NC (Not complete!)

Oh, how I miss living in Maine/New Hampshire. For so many reasons, including my inability to find bulk spices, vegan cheese, slightly less overpriced vegenaise, and much more here.

Let's start on post. There are two Commissaries here - the one on north post is - yuck. The extent of their veganness seems to be Silk Nog. South post Commissary is better - you can get tofu for $1.21 or $1.60 a box/lb! They carry Nasoya brand and House brand. In the same case they have some meat analogs - either Yves or SmartLife, I can't currently remember which.

They have Silk and 8th Continent soymilks, as well as some shelf stable varieties, including Kikkoman.

They also have a Bob's Red Mill section, and though I have requested TVP and Vital Wheat Gluten, they don't yet carry either. I also requested that they carry Vegenaise, Bubbies, and Tofurky.

A link for vegan friendly restauarants in Fayetteville! Guess I've got some eating to do!
  1. Sherefe
  2. The Fresh Cafe
  3. Taj Mahal
  4. Bombay Bistro
  5. Sherefe Mediterranean Grll
  6. Coach Light Trattoria
  7. Rude Awakening coffee house
  8. The Squeeze Cafe

Boo. It's always really disappointing to get to a new place and realize it's not as great as the old one. Just keep on looking and hopefully you'll find some hidden gems.

Indeed! I can't even find basic stuff. Whole Foods and Trader Joes are an hour away.

Hi Sarah :) There isn't really any one stop shopping - there's a little bit all over.

I get tofu, "turkey" slices, teeny bags of wheat gluten, quinoa and soy/almond milk at the South Post Commissary. Harris Teeter has Gardein in the frozen section. Across the street from Harris Teeter is The Apple Crate which is sucktastically overpriced for the most part, but I get FYH cheese, ezekiel bread and wraps, and some other things on surprise sale there. The Food Lion in Westwood Plaza has ice cream coconut milk, coconut kefir, coconut yogurt, and some freezer goodies. I get florida crystals sugar at Wal-Mart. There's a Mediterranean Mart on Cliffdale just off of Skibo that has herbs, spices, dates, tahini, dried beans and some other stuff. I get my nutritional yeast at The Vitamin Shoppe on Morganton.

If you're looking for something specific, just let me know!

Hi, I'm a senior at a school in Fayetteville, I was wondering if you still lived in Fort Bragg?

Hi Marya - I do indeed!

Hey,
So for groceries there's Harris Teeter (has frozen variety vegan meals, vegan canned soups, tempeh, etc.)and the Apple Crate (has seiten and some really nice frozen food). The food lion on the crossing of Raeford and Ireland has really nice vegan ravioli etc. And I think the one off of McPherson might have good stuff too.

For restaurants, I would also add the Royal Grill and Skibo and Cliffdale. They have a lot of vegan options. Thai pepper (two locations, on Bragg Blvd and Reilly) has really nice Thai/Asian food. They will veganize anything on the manu. Shalimar on Raeford Rd. is pretty good Indian place. The Mellow Mushroom has vegan pizza 9with daiya chease). Chipotle and Moe's have vegan dishes as well.

I live on Bragg actually and am new to the vegan thing. I've been having such a hard time finding decent food at the commissary that I can eat.
Do you know where I can get nutritional yeast? I haven't had any luck finding some here.

Hi Chelsea! Are you going to south or north commissary? South is by the Reilly Road gate and has more vegan friendly stuff.

I get my nooch at the Vitamin Shoppe on Morganton Road - they have it at Apple Crate too but Apple Crate is a rip off and I only go when desperate.

I think I'm actually going to start a Fayetteville / Fort Bragg Vegans group on facebook some day soon.

Let me know if you have more questions! :)

Hi Sarah, do you still leave on post?

What's your facebook page? I just moved from Hawaii to Fort Bragg and I'd like to meet some vegans here.

Where is the cheapest place to get Daiya chesse? I live out in raeford and tho I love that the apple crate exist it is grossly overpriced! Also veganase and vegan sour cream?

Sarah said...

Are you military? They now sell daiya shreds at the south post commissary in cheddar and mozzarella. I used to just pop into Apple Crate sometimes and buy daiya when it was on sale - it freezes well, so you can stock up.

Vegenaise only at Apple Crate. They also have the sour cream, and I feel like Harris Teeter has sour cream too, but I'm not positive - I haven't bought any in a really long time. Too much pressure to eat it all quick before it goes bad.

Hello,
I'm trying the vegan diet. I have no idea where to start except to eat more veggies. Is there a specialist in town that can help me get started?

Apple Crate

Re: last comment: last I knew, Apple Crate had high prices and abysmal customer service. Maybe they now smile and say hi to people who walk in--that'd be a nice change.
