Questing for Seaweed

Photobucket

This morning, after T.V. and I went to the gym, we went to our favorite health food store to look for sea vegetables. Now, it's true, I don't like seaweed, unless it's nori on an inside out roll. But I have been doing some reading on hypothyroidism because I believe I have many of the symptoms. Yesterday, I found a thread on one of the RAW forums about a lady who cured her hypothyroidism with her RAW diet - she was on medication for 6 years, and 11 months after going RAW, she went off her meds. So anyway, she said she takes sea vegetables every day for the iodine, and I went questing for iodine-rich seaweed.

One of the nice ladies there said that arame is the least objectionable (she said yummiest, or something like that, but I'm not going that far) so I grabbed a bag of Emerald Cove Organic Pacific Arame, even though the bag doesn't list any specifics about iodine.

Then I noticed a bag of Eden Mekabu (Wakame Sea Vegetable Sporophyll). No one at the store had tried it, but one teaspoon has 60% of the RDA for iodine!

When I got home, I opened the Mekabu and smelled it, and was relieved that nothing obviously fishy jumped out at me. I made a smoothie of 2 celery stalks, 2 smallish bananas, about 1/4 cup of raspberries and a teaspoon or two of the mekabu - and it tasted just like the smoothie normally does! RELIEF. So now I'll be incorporating more seaweed into my foods.

I must be weird, because I actually enjoy the taste of seaweed! I would have no problem throwing into salads or even eating it straight up as a snack. I'm glad you found a way to consume it without really focusing on the flavor. I hope it helps you with your symptoms :)

Ooh! Good to know! I hate HATE HATE the taste of seaweed, or at least it seems you have a similar tolerance level with the inside-out roll thing. But I'm really glad to hear you had a good experience with the wekabu as I'd like to start adding seaweed to my diet, too.

Jessie - Not weird - lots of people do!

swell - the mekabu seems fine! i didn't rehydrate it first - i don't know if that matters.

Good for you for adding seaweed to your diet! Fishy smoothies ROCK!
I'm going to try some of this Mekabu since my kelp is a wee bit too fishy for my smoothies :)

I gotta try that stuff.
